Rules and Regulations
The tournament will follow the UPA's 11th Edition ruleset. Follow the link for the new rules, as well as a document outlining the substantive changes between the 11th edition and the 10th. Should you have any questions or require clarifications on any of the new rules, feel free to send our Rules Guru, Mark, an e-mail.
There will be a few modifications to the 11th Edition. They are as follows:
Game Format
- The gender ratio will be 4/3, with four guys and three girls.
- Coaches can play with their team during and throughout the tournament. We just please ask that they "match-up" wisely (ie. both coaches agree to go on at the same time so that they can mark up against each other). However, if the other coach requests that one coach not play, they must abide by their request.
- The start of each game will be marked by one horn blast.
Pool Play (Morning Games)
- All pool play games will be played to time, not score. The horn signals last point of game, and ties are okay. (See schedule sheet for more details)
- There will be no halftime for morning pool play games
- Each team will have 1 timeout for the morning pool play games
Playoffs (Afternoon Games)
- All playoff games will be played to 13, win by 2, with a point cap at 15
- There will have a half-time at 7, with no halftime break and teams mirror the pull and ends as chosen at the start
- Teams will have 3 timeouts per game; 1 per half (for a total of 2) and one floater.
Note: All time-outs are lost when the horn sounds (any horn other than the start-of-game horn), and calling a time-out after the horn sounds if the disc is live or in-play (i.e., not if play has stopped or before a pull) results in a turnover.
Other Changes
- Foot blocks are not allowed within three metres of the thrower, unless agreed upon by coaches/captains prior to each game (Captain's Clause). If a foot block is attempted within this area, the thrower may call a violation, which is resolved as if it were a foul on the marker.
Definition of a Cap: Maximum score limits imposed before or during a game to limit the time required to declare a winner. The game ends when one team's score first reaches the cap.
- A point cap is a maximum score limit imposed before the event.
- A soft time cap is a maximum score limit imposed during a game once a predetermined time of play has elapsed and after the current point is completed.
- A hard time cap is the ending of a game once a predetermined duration of play has elapsed and after the current point is completed. If the score is tied, the teams play until one additional goal is scored.
Playoff Bracket (Afternoon Games)
- The soft time cap will be signalled 15 minutes before the end of the allotted game time, by two horn blasts. The cap is applied at the first sound of the first blast.
- Once the scoring attempt in progress when the cap is applied has completed, add two to the higher score at that time. Play to that score. For example, if the score is 8 to 5 when the horn is blown, and then the next goal brings it to 8 to 6, the game is played to 10 (8 + 2).
- The hard time cap will be signalled 5 minutes before the end of the allotted game time by three horn blasts. The cap is applied at the first sound of the first blast. Once the scoring attempt in progress when the cap is applied has completed, the game is over (if the score is not tied). If the game is tied after that point, play one more point.
- In the championship game(s), the hard time cap horn (three blasts), will not signal the ‘last point’, but rather will be played as a 1-point soft time cap. In addition, the Champion has to score the final point to win.
- For clarity, in all cap situations, there is no “win by 2” requirement. Rather the first team to reach the cap wins.
Communicate with the coach of the team you are playing before the game, so both teams are clear concerning the time rules. If games run over the hard cap, teams will still need to turn around and play their next game when that game is scheduled to start.
Coaches
All teams are required to have at least one coach, sponsor parent, or approved adult at the field with the team at all times. We want everyone to have a safe and fun tournament.
