Update! March 26, 2010

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everybody who supported, fundraised, participated and believed in Huckin' For Hearts these past 7 years. Without the support of each and every one of you, this tournament would not be what it grew to become. I would not have become the person I am today without your support.

I remember that faithful day in the spring of 2004 where I was sitting in my Biology 12 class drawing doodles of frisbees in my notebook and dreaming of a tournament that my team could participate in and have fun, without the fear of getting our butts handed to us on a silver platter. It was from that daydream that Huckin' For Hearts was formed. In our inaugural year, we had 3 teams participate and we struggled to make a fourth so we can play against each other. With our friends and random fellow pick up players, we managed to pull together a fun one day tournament. And from there, it grew. And grew. And grew into this amazing 18 team tournament that incorporated ultimate, goaltimate, clinics and coach obstacle courses into this amazing one day event. And even now, as I sit and think about it, I laugh at all the fun memories I have had, and am so grateful as to how passionately everybody jumped on board to help me grow this tournament and help the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

So after an amazing seven year run, this is where I hang up my Tournament Director clipboard and pack away my airhorn. As adventures go, I'm about to embark on a new one to another location far away from British Columbia - that is why this tournament ends with my depart.

Thank you. To everybody who believed in me and Huckin' For Hearts. To every player, coach, mentor, parent, sponsor, volunteer, staff and teacher - thank you for helping me with my fundraising efforts for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and for helping me grow as a person. I couldn't have done it without you.

And finally, what can I say? It's been amazing. No words can express how much of an impact this tournament has had on my life. By being at Huckin' For Hearts, you've each had an impact on my life. And therefore, with my final words, I can only leave you with this quote that was passed onto me during my first day on the ultimate field:

Keep the disc in the sky,
And the dream in your heart.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Mo Nguyen

About the Tournament

In 2004, a student (Mo) and teacher (James) came together with two objectives:

  1. having beginning high school teams gain valuable tournament experience
  2. raising research funds for The Heart and Stroke Foundation of the BC and Yukon

With that in mind, and with generous help from friends and people in the local ultimate community, the tournament Huckin' For Hearts began. Since that time, we've raised $22,113.39 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and with your help, will be raising much, much more in the future.

About Heart and Stroke Foundation Research

Every year, more than 50,000 strokes and 75,000 heart attacks occur. Sadly, one in three deaths in Canada are due to heart disease and stroke.

For more than 50 years, Canadians have looked to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to fund vital research that will reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke and improve the quality of their lives. The Foundation has met that challenge. The mortality rate from heart disease and stroke has decreased by 70% since 1952, thanks in large part to their research.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HEART INTO IT.
